What Is Affiliate Marketing?

What's affiliate marketing? Although the number of online affiliate programs has continued to grow over the last decade, there are still many people that have no idea what affiliates do or how they make money. Programs vary, of course, but here's how most of them work.

First, you need a website or a blog, but don't let that scare you. Building a website or publishing a blog is not hard work. It just takes a little time to set everything up.

If you want to try a blog first, you can do that without paying a fee. Blogspot.com, for example, is a website that allows people to write about anything that interests them. You can use a blog to review products or provide information about what's new in your field of expertise. Everyone is an expert in something. Sometimes, it just takes a little effort to figure out what that "something" is.

Having your own website gives you a little more freedom. There are rules to abide by when another company is hosting your blog. Some of those rules are not affiliate marketing "friendly".

You are probably wondering why you need a website. In a nutshell, affiliate programs are something like offline commission-only jobs; except that you make your sales-pitch one time and you earn money for years to come.

For example, people that have blogs providing online product reviews are usually signed up with affiliate programs offered by the companies that make the products. Or, they might be signed up with retailers like Amazon.com that sell a variety of different products and different brands. The reviewers can be honest about their personal opinions of the products because they make a commission regardless of which product the visitor chooses.

When you sign up with an affiliate marketing program, the company will give you a "link", which is actually a line of HTML code that you put on your website.

This is what you hope will happen.

Someone surfing the web finds your site and decides to click on the link that takes them to the seller's website. They like what they see there and decide to buy. The company records that sale and your unique ID number. You earn a commission.

Affiliate programs usually have a minimum dollar amount that you must earn in order to get a monthly check, but if you don't earn that much in a month, they carry your commissions forward to the next, until you reach the minimum. Then, they send you a check.

Those are the basics of affiliate marketing. Some people make more than others but it's definitely an easy way to create another stream of income, which is something that anyone can use.

Choose the right affiliate marketing opportunity today and jump start your online money making career.
